Bernina Express is undoubtedly one of the most scenic train rides in the world. It is a fabulous journey in an electrified narrow gauge from Chur station in Switzerland to Tirano in northern Italy. Since 2008 it is in the list of World Heritage Site of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The panoramic sightseeing coaches with enlarged windows of the train make it all season favorite for travelers visiting Europe. In sunny summer days the Swiss meadows look wonderful and in winter the Swiss Engadin Alps become wonderland.
Bernina Express Experience
The Bernina Express takes about four hours to cover 144 km (90 miles) from Chur to Tirano running over 196 bridges and going through 55 tunnels at 2,253 metres above sea at certain point passing the Morteratsch Glacier.
Rhaetian Railway operates the tourist-centric train on the Albula line (built between 1898 and 1904) and Bernina line (constructed between 1908 and 1910). Between Chur and Samedan it crosses the famous Landwasser Viaduct from mountainside to mountainside. From Pontresina the Bernina Express climbs up the Bernina Pass and reaches highest point, and thereafter descends through fir trees and pretty village of Poschiavo. In the remaining part of the journey from here the train runs round the Brusio Spiral Viaduct.
Where To Take Photos
While crossing the famous Landwasser Viaduct from mountainside to mountainside tourists love to take photos and the Brusio Spiral Viaduct too is highly picturesque.
