Phuket Guide: Thailand's Most Popular Tourist Destination

Phuket, the largest island in Thailand, is known the world over for its amazing beaches, its vibrant nightlife and its first-class hotels. But its popularity is also a source of problems to tourists and locals alike, such as scams, overcrowded facilities and loud party-goers.

Getting to Phuket From Bangkok and Abroad

Several airlines, both domestic and international, link Phuket directly to international destinations as well as to major cities in Thailand. The airport is located on the island, to the North-West of Phuket Town. To reach beaches from the airport, taking a taxi or a bus is necessary. Visitors should be aware of the fact that taxis tend to grossly overcharge Caucasian-looking visitors when leaving the airport.

From visitors coming from Bangkok, it is also possible to reach Phuket by bus. Several buses depart daily from Bangkok’s Southern Bus Terminal. Since it is a 13-hour journey, it is usually preferable to take an overnight bus.

The Best Beaches in Phuket

Patong is, without a doubt, the most famous beach in Phuket. It is also, however, the most overcrowded one due to its exuberant nightlife and entertainment venues. Visitors in search of a quieter stay may want to look at some of the other beaches available on the island.

Kata Noi Beach is usually considered as one of the best beaches on Phuket island. It is quiet and more picturesque than Patong. Another excellent choice is Bang Thao, or Laguna Beach. Located to the North of Patong, it is a long stretch of white sand enjoyed daily by only a handful of tourists and locals.

What to Do in Phuket

Phuket Town is the place to go to for visitors interested in shopping. In addition to its traditional or more tourist-oriented markets, it also has several Western-style shopping centers where quality goods can be bought at a cheaper price than in Europe or North America. The largest shopping center is Central Festival Phuket, which also includes a bowling alley, a karaoke and a large movie multiplex.

Sightseeing in Phuket usually includes a visit to the island’s majestic waterfalls. Several agencies on the island run tours which include visits of the most impressive waterfalls in Thailand.

Obviously, Phuket being an island, watersports are extremely popular here. Scuba diving, snorkeling and even fishing trips can be bought either at hotel desks or at tour agencies, especially in Phuket Town or Patong. Visitors interested in such activities should however thoroughly check the qualifications of the people running the tours. Many unqualified Western diving instructors have been known to work on the island.
