The health sector seems an important foray for Apple as over the years it has continued expanding into it. However, it has made its first known acquisition into it.
The iDevice giant has acquired personal health data startup, Silicon Valley-based Gliimpse, which has built a personal health data platform to help people in the United States collect, personalize, and share a picture of their health data.
Founded by Anil Sethi and Karthik Hariharan, the company was formed in 2013.
Sethi was a systems engineer at the iPhone maker in late 1980s and is a serial entrepreneur. In the past decade he worked with Sequoia Software, a health startup.
Apple acquired the Glimpse earlier in 2016, but was tight lipped about it. Now it has confirmed saying, “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.”
Sethi said Gliimpse was born of a personal need. He said, “As a consumer of healthcare, I leave behind a bread-crumb-trail of medical info wherever I’ve been seen. But, I’m unable to easily access or share my own data.”
As of now Gliimpse is intended for patients suffering from diabetes, cancer and some other serious diseases.
It is yet not disclosed or known how Apple will use the acquired technology.
Meanwhile, it is important to note Apple has not yet disclosed about acquisition either on its website or its LinkedIn profile page.
