Five Fun Free Attractions In Coastal North Carolina

With 301 miles of coastline, every member of the family is sure to find something enjoyable. Fortunately the beaches are there for all to use and in some places, parking remains free. Check out some other freebies.

Old Brunswick Town, Winnabow

Built in the pre-Revolutionary era, Brunswick Town was leveled by the British and never rebuilt. Fort Anderson was built over it during the civil war and served as a major defense of the Lower Cape Fear. Historic structures remaining are the walls of St. Philliip’s Church and foundations of other buildings seen on the walking tour. Artifacts are displayed in the visitor center and audiovisual programs are presented there.

Silver Coast Winery, Ocean Isle

The winery is open March through December. Free tours are available Monday through Saturday 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. and Sunday noon until 5:00 pm. Picnic in the gardens and visit the art gallery where local artists exhibits are rotated often. Special events such Mother’s Day specials are offered.

Oak Island Lighthouse, Oak Island

Tours to the second story are available on a regular basis throughout the summer. Climbers must be seven years old or older. Tours to the top can be scheduled by appointment two weeks in advance, online. Climbers to the top must be at least nine years old and wear closed toe shoes.

Kure Beach Free Summer Concert Series

From June through August, free concerts are scheduled at the Fort Fisher Military Recreation Area. They are open to the public. Bring a blanket, chairs, and a picnic basket. Beverages can be purchased and parking is free.

Tryon Palace Gardens, New Bern

The gardens of this Colonial Royal Governor’s palace are open to the public the first Sunday of every month from March through October. Other free educational programs run at various times. Tickets to tour inside the home are on sale and guides are dressed in costumes of the period. Located in the historic area of New Bern, home of Pepsi Cola, there are other points of interest nearby.

Jockey’s Ridge, Nags Head

The tallest natural sand dune system in the Eastern U.S., according to its website, this park offers picnic shelters and an excellent hang gliding venue reminescent of the Wright brothers. Also conducive to kite flying and water sports. Trails of one to one and a half miles offer a close look at the area, or stroll out the 360 foot boardwalk to stay off the sand. Bring any equipment on hand, such as kites, kayaks and coolers and enjoy a free day outside.
